Eric
Furie M.D.
Born in New York, Dr. Furie was raised on Long Island and
excelled in academics. Having attended multiple universities
to explore various fields of study, including Harvard, Columbia,
Bard College, Stony Brook and the City College of New York,
Dr. Furie was able to explore his vast areas of interest and
identify his true passion, medicine.
While
playing college rugby Dr. Furie sustained a fracture of his
scaphoid, a small bone in the wrist. Unfortunately his wrist
would not go on to heal, a complication known as a non-union.
This led Dr. Furie to perform research at the Mt. Sinai Hospital
in New York using pulsed ultrasound, and ultimately pursue
a career as an orthopaedic surgeon.
After
graduating medical school at the University of Buffalo at
the ripe old age of 24, Dr. Furie performed a five year residency
at Stony Brook University Hospital in Orthopaedic Surgery.
He then furthered his interest in sports injuries, arthroscopy
and ligament reconstruction by performing a one year intensive
Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Fellowship with Frank Noyes,
MD at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center
in Ohio. Dr. Furie is board certified by the American Board
of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS)
and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
(AAOS).
Not just a clinician, nor just a researcher, Dr. Furie has
also served as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
at Atlanta Medical Center and is currently teaching orthopaedic
residents at the same institution.
Having
treated athletes of all ages, at all skill levels, Dr. Furie
has been able to get players back to the playing field throughout
his 12 years in practice. Just as importantly, Dr. Furie has
been able to use the newest techniques and most modern equipment
available to get young and old arthritic patients back to
activity. After undergoing five surgeries on his knees in
2007, Dr. Furie is well aware of the difficulties associated
with having major surgery, both the physical and emotional
stress. Dr. Furie has been able to take this experience as
a patient, and use it to help others navigate their road to
good health and pain-free activity with the least amount of
obstacles.
Dr.
Furie has a wife and three children, and has been proud to
call Atlanta his home for the past 12 years.
