PROCEDURES
PERFORMED
Knee Replacement
Knee
replacement or Knee Arthroplasty is indicated for patients
with osteonecrosis, osteoarthritis, an inflammatory arthropathy
or crystalline arthropathy when the pain in one's knee limits
them from their daily activities.
Dr. Furie
has been performing knee replacements for over a decade and
has used such techniques as computer navigation and patient
specific arthroplasty. Patient Specific Arthroplasty (PSA),
the latest technique used to get the most accurate alignment
of the surgical components, requires a pre-operative CT scan
or MRI, and allows the surgeon to visualize in 3 dimensions
the surgery before it's performed.
In addition
to providing more accurate alignment of the knee replacement,
PSA also causes less blood loss, and requires less operative
time than other techniques. (read

Dr. Furie
also is one of Atlanta's leaders in Unicondylar Knee Replacement.
Many people have come to his office being told that they are
"too young" for a knee replacement, when, in fact they are
perfect candidates for a partial (unicondylar) knee replacement
(UKR).
UKR is
used to replace the worn out side of the knee while leaving
the uninjured part of the knee intact. This spares the ligamentous
structures and relieves the pain, while causing less blood
loss and requiring a shorter hospital stay and shorter rehabilitation
than a total knee replacement. (learn

Hip
Replacement
Hip replacement
(hip arthroplasty) is performed on individuals diagnosed with
osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis (AVN), rheumatoid arthritis
or end stage femoroacetabular impingement who can not perform
their usual daily activities.
Frequently,
the inability to go shopping, climb stairs or tie one's shoes
are indicators that a hip replacement would be beneficial.
Dr. Furie
has performed cemented and uncemented hip replacements in
patients aged 18-95 years when circumstances demanded it.
The typical patient is aged 60-80 and has already tried oral
medications and lifestyle modifications without success. Many
types of implants are available, including metal, ceramic
and polyethylene components and tailoring of the implant to
the patient is dependent on many factors. (read

Shoulder
Replacement
Shoulder
replacement (shoulder arthroplasty) surgery is a rapidly evolving
field of medicine.
Several
types of shoulder replacements are available and Dr. Furie
has been trained by internationally renowned surgeons in this
demanding technique. Hemiarthroplasty, resurfacing, and Reverse
Arthroplasty are all techniques used to relieve pain in one's
shoulder secondary to osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis
, rheumatoid arthritis or AVN.
Careful
evaluation, and frequently the use of advanced radiologic
studies are necessary in determining the correct procedure
for the individual patient. (read

Knee
Arthroscopy
Knee
arthroscopy has become not just a diagnostic tool, but the
major instrument in the treatment of a wide variety of knee
ailments.
Sports
related injuries and work related injuries such as patellar
subluxation, chondromalacia, meniscal tears, ligament (ACL,
PCL, MCL, LCL) ruptures, and chondral defects can all be treated
arthroscopically. Recovery time for arthroscopic procedures
is frequently shorter than open procedures, and arthroscopic
procedures also have less morbidity.
Dr. Furie
performed a prestigious Fellowship at The Cincinnati Sports
Medicine & Arthroscopy Center and has performed thousands
of arthroscopies in his career. (learn

Shoulder
Arthroscopy
Shoulder
Arthroscopy has been a powerful adjunct to shoulder surgery
for the last fifteen years. Injuries such as rotator cuff
tears, labral tears and shoulder instability can frequently
be performed through small incisions, on an outpatient basis,
using the arthroscope. Overhead athletes and persons with
jobs requiring high physical demands frequently have diagnoses
requiring Dr. Furie to perform arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

Ankle
Arthroscopy
Although
not as common as shoulder or knee arthroscopy, ankle arthroscopy
provides the same advantages to the ankle as in the other
joints. Small incisions and a rapid recovery allow such diagnoses
as ankle impingement and osteochondritis dissecans to be treated
through the arthroscope. (learn

Fracture Fixation
Taking
care of trauma patients involved in car and motorcycle accidents,
as well as patients who have fallen and broken a hip or fractured
an ankle, has been a mainstay of the Midtown Sports Medicine
practice since its inception. From fingers to feet, and every
bone (excluding spine) in between, Dr. Furie has extensive
experience with plate, rod and wiring techniques. (read

Ligament
& Soft Tissue Repair
Achilles
rupture, patellar tendon tears, quadriceps tendon tears and
ligament injuries about the knee or ankle frequently require
surgical repair.
Preventing
contracture during the healing process, while maintaining
motion and gradually increasing strength are the premises
we base your treatment plan on. After completing a Fellowship
with an internationally renowned knee surgeon whose practice
focused on soft tissue injuries and reconstructions, Dr. Furie
has gained the expertise to identify the appropriate candidates
for repair and reconstruction. Through his years of experience
excellent surgical outcomes have become his benchmark.
